Earth Day Events in NYC

What to do for Earth Day 2014 in New York City

New York City and Earth Day (which this year takes place on April 22) are not often associated — it doesn’t seem like the exhaust fumes, mountains of trash bags, and graffiti go hand in hand with conservation. But Earth Day New York aims to change that notion. Since 1989 the nonprofit has raised environmental awareness through educational programs, engaging speakers, and fun festivals. Here’s what they have lined up for 2014.

On Earth Day itself, Union Square welcomes the environmentalists. Chief among the activities is the green-vehicle runway and exhibition, which highlights and praises alternatively fueled cars. Also on hand are live performances and educational displays by local and national environmental conservation organizations. The fun begins at 11 a.m.

The festivities move to Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall on April 23 and 24. In addition to live music, the day is packed with kids activities as well as engaging talks and interactive displays stressing the importance of sustainability. The festival kicks off at 11 a.m. (earthdayny.org).
